As much as 27% of the food available for consumption ends up being thrown away. That's about a pound of food every day for every American.

I feel terrible every time I end up throwing out some piece of fruit, or container of leftovers, because it went bad before we had a chance to eat it. I try to only buy as much food as we think we'll eat, but we still end up throwing stuff out. The Wasted Food blog, mention in the above article, has tips on how to cut down on the amount of food you throw away.
