Dream Cover Versions

I was having a conversation not long ago with a friend of mine about the song "These Are Days" (shut up) and realized that, once I put my dislike of Natalie Merchant aside, it was a wonderful song:
These are days you'll remember
When May is rushing over you with desire to be
Part of the miracles you see in every hour
You'll know its true that you are blessed and lucky
It's true that you are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break
These days you might feel a shaft of light make its way across your face
And when you do you'll know how it was meant to be
See the signs and know their meaning
Its true, you'll know how it was meant to be
Hear the signs and know they're speaking to you, to you
Really pretty. I'd love to hear someone else sing it, but who? I originally though Sufjan Stevens but my friend suggested that someone with a little more growl in their voice would be better, in order to "un-pretty" the song a bit. I suggested Tom Waits, and she said she had thought of him too but wondered if he had the range.

I couldn't find evidence of any extant cover versions of this song, at least not on The Covers Project or All Music. Ultimately I settled on Neko Case as my choice, which is sort of a cheat because I'd love to hear her sing just about anything, but I think she'd do a fantastic job. Other people who I'd love to hear do this particular song include Luka Bloom and poor dead Jeff Buckley.

What cover versions would you love to hear? What songs, and by whom?

i think the lyrics of these are days are still too romantical and high school poetess-y for it to be a great song. that said, i wonder what lyle lovett could do with it.

great question, btw. i gotta think about who i'd like to hear covering what!

This is a great question. "Heart of Saturday Night" era Tom Waits would nail the song, although it might be a bit saccharine for his taste.

As for what cover versions I'd want to hear, I like surprises. The Cure covering Hendrix, Brad Mehldau covering Radiohead, Herbie Hancock covering Nirvana, White Stripes covering Patti Page or Burt Bacharach, Buckley covering Nina Simone or MC5.

I need to think about this more. I'll know it when I hear it. ;-)

Maybe I'll give it a shot. I like the song but yeah hate the extant version.
