last week i was walking with the girls past the planned parenthood on bleecker street. (the first in the country, i believe.) elderly christian protester guy was there, as ever, on the opposite side of the street. i dropped an envelope as we were passing him and he quickly picked it up and handed it to me with a smile, moving very fast for an old guy. i thanked him, thought about saying something like "it was very nice of you to pick up my mail but i hope you don't think we're sympatico simply b/c i am walking with these two lovely non-aborted children" but really, what would i say? so i just smiled. as we crossed the street i waved and gave a thumbs-up to the clinic escorts. was the old man watching? what did he think? the whole interaction was so intimate and strange and sad.
